‘Rock,’ investors buy XFL for reported $15M
Pro wrestling star-turned-actor Dwayne ‘‘The Rock’’ Johnson announced on Twitter that he and a group of investors had acquired the XFL for a reported $15 million.
‘‘With gratitude & passion I’ve built a career with my own two hands and will apply these callouses to our @xfl2020 brand,’’ his Twitter post read. ‘‘Excited to create something special for the fans!’’
The XFL had eight franchises and had played five games of a planned 10-game schedule before canceling the rest of its season in March because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The league suspended operations and laid off all its employees April 10 before filing for bankruptcy protection April 13.
