‘Rock,’ in­vestors buy XFL for re­ported $15M

Pro wrestling star-turned-ac­tor Dwayne ‘‘The Rock’’ John­son an­nounced on Twit­ter that he and a group of in­vestors had ac­quired the XFL for a re­ported $15 mil­lion.

‘‘With grat­i­tude & pas­sion I’ve built a ca­reer with my own two hands and will ap­ply these cal­louses to our @xfl2020 brand,’’ his Twit­ter post read. ‘‘Ex­cited to cre­ate some­thing spe­cial for the fans!’’

The XFL had eight fran­chises and had played five games of a planned 10-game sched­ule be­fore can­cel­ing the rest of its sea­son in March be­cause of the COVID-19 pan­demic. The league sus­pended op­er­a­tions and laid off all its em­ploy­ees April 10 be­fore fil­ing for bank­ruptcy pro­tec­tion April 13.
