Hurricanes sweep away Rangers

-

Sebastian Aho scored twice in the third period and James Reimer was strong in net to help the Hurricanes beat the Rangers 4-1 on Tuesday and sweep the Stanley Cup qualifier series in three games after losing all four regular-season meetings.

Warren Foegele scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period for the Hurricanes. Then Aho followed with a highlight-reel goal about 5½ minutes later, taking the puck from Rangers defenseman Jacob Trouba along the boards and skating in on Tony DeAngelo to backhand the puck past rookie Igor Shesterkin as he went to his knees. Aho added an empty-netter late to seal it.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist’s streak of 129 consecutive starts in the postseason ended with Shesterkin’s start. Lundqvist’s streak is the third-longest in NHL history by a goalie with one team, behind Martin Brodeur (194 games with the Devils from 1994-2012) and Patrick Roy (133 games with the Avalanche from 1996-2003).

Maple Leafs 3, Blue Jackets 0

Auston Matthews and John Tavares scored and the Maple Leafs beat the Blue Jackets 3-0 on Tuesday to even their best-of-five qualifying-round series at one game apiece.

Leafs defenseman Jake Muzzin was taken from the ice on a stretcher with 1:52 left in the third period after he fell chest-first onto the skate of Jackets forward Oliver Bjorkstrand to the right behind the Leafs’ goal.

Muzzin was down for more than 10 minutes lying on his back before being immobilized and taken from the ice. The Leafs said he was taken to a hospital, was alert and able to move all limbs.

“He was responsive,” Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. “We’re awaiting the assessment.”

Rask expected back in goal

Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask is expected to start against the Lightning in their roundrobin game Wednesday after practicing for the second consecutive day. Rask, who did not play in the Bruins’ round-robin opener Sunday, returned to practice Monday after being quarantined for two days as a precaution against COVID-19.
