Molina among infected Cardinals

-

Nine-time All-Star catcher Yadier Molina says he’s one of the Cardinals players who tested positive for COVID-19. He revealed his results Tuesday in a Spanish-language Instagram post.

Soon afterward, the Cardinals issued a release naming six of the players who have tested positive. The others are infielders Paul DeJong, Edmundo Sosa and Rangel Ravelo and pitchers Junior Fernandez and Kodi Whitley.

“I am saddened to have tested positive for COVID-19, even after adhering to safety guidelines that were put in place,” Molina said in a release issued by the team. “I will do everything within my power to return as soon as possible for Cardinals fans, the city of St. Louis and my teammates.”

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Monday that seven players and six staff members had tested positive. The Cardinals said Tuesday that six players had decided to grant permission to have their names revealed.

The Cardinals’ outbreak resulted in the postponement of a three-game weekend series at Milwaukee and a four-game home series with the Tigers. The Cardinals have played just five games and are hoping to return to action Friday, hosting the Cubs.

Full of replacements, Marlins win in return

After replacing more than half their team following their coronavirus outbreak, the Marlins returned to action for the first time in nine days, beating the host Orioles 4-0 in a game pushed back nearly an hour when the latest test results were delayed. Among the 18 players joining the Marlins’ 30-man roster were outfielder Monte Harrison and right-hander Jose Guzman, highly regarded prospects reaching the majors for the first time, and infielder Eddy Alvarez, a 30-year-old Miami native who won a silver medal in speedskating at the 2014 Winter Olympics and had yet to play in the majors.

Twins’ torrid start continues

Jose Berrios allowed one run and four hits over six strong innings and Nelson Cruz had three hits as the Twins beat the visiting Pirates in a game briefly delayed when an unauthorized drone flew over Target Field. The Twins won their fifth in a row, completed a 7-1 homestand and improved to 9-2 for the second time in their 60-year history.

† German Marquez pitched into the eighth inning, striking out nine, in the host Rockies’ 5-2 win over the Giants, which moved the Rockies to 8-2 for the second time in franchise history. Officials reversed a three-run homer by the Giants’ Steven Duggar in the fifth that hit off the top of the wall.

† Shane Bieber overcame two solo homers to pitch into the eighth and Franmil Reyes hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth as the Indians beat the host Reds 4-2 to snap a four-game skid.
