Irish practice still on hold after five more positives

Notre Dame football’s self-imposed hiatus from practice stretched to two days Thursday after its cumulative numbers from two rounds of coronaviru­s testing rolled in.

The entire 116-man roster (including walkons) was tested Monday and Wednesday. The cumulative result from those 232 tests was five positives. All five of those players are in isolation. Another six, identified through contact tracing, are in quarantine.

A third round of testing was planned for Friday morning. The Irish are scheduled to open the season Sept. 12 at home against Duke.

From mid-June until the student population began returning to campus Aug. 3, the football team had registered two positive tests. Since the students’ return, the team has added seven. The school announced Tuesday it was pivoting to online learning for two weeks.

NBA Lakers even series; Lillard hurts finger

Anthony Davis had 31 points, including 21 in the first half, as the top-seeded Lakers topped the Trail Blazers 111-88 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, evening their first-round playoff series at 1-1 after a stunning loss in the opener. Blazers All-Star guard Damian Lillard (18 points) dislocated his left index finger and left the game in the third quarter.

† Giannis Antetokoun­mpo finished with 28 points and 20 rebounds and the Bucks built a 23-point lead in the first half on their way to beating the Magic 111-96 and tying their firstround series at a game apiece. Nikola Vucevic scored 32 for the Magic.

† James Harden had 21 points and nine assists and the Rockets made 19 of an NBArecord 56 three-point attempts to beat the Thunder 111-98 for a 2-0 lead in their series.

† Duncan Robinson hit his first six shots, all from three-point range, and finished with 24 points to help the Heat beat the Pacers 119100 and take a 2-0 lead in their series.

NHL Islanders send Caps packing

Anthony Beauvillie­r scored twice and Semyon Varlamov shut out the team that drafted him as the Islanders knocked the Capitals out of the playoffs in the first round with a 4-0 win in Game 5 in Toronto. The Islanders next face the Lightning or Bruins.

GOLF Four-way tie out front at Northern Trust

Harris English finished with a 7-under 64, sharing the lead with Kevin Streelman,

Cameron Davis and Russell Henley after the first round of the Northern Trust in Norton, Massachuse­tts. Tiger Woods was four strokes back after opening with a 68.

† American Amy Olson’s 4-under 67 gave her a three-stroke lead in the first round of the Women’s British Open in Troon, Scotland.
