Ir­ish prac­tice still on hold af­ter five more pos­i­tives

Notre Dame foot­ball’s self-im­posed hia­tus from prac­tice stretched to two days Thurs­day af­ter its cu­mu­la­tive num­bers from two rounds of coro­n­avirus test­ing rolled in.

The en­tire 116-man ros­ter (in­clud­ing walkons) was tested Mon­day and Wed­nes­day. The cu­mu­la­tive re­sult from those 232 tests was five pos­i­tives. All five of those play­ers are in iso­la­tion. An­other six, iden­ti­fied through con­tact trac­ing, are in quar­an­tine.

A third round of test­ing was planned for Fri­day morn­ing. The Ir­ish are sched­uled to open the sea­son Sept. 12 at home against Duke.

From mid-June un­til the stu­dent pop­u­la­tion be­gan re­turn­ing to cam­pus Aug. 3, the foot­ball team had reg­is­tered two pos­i­tive tests. Since the stu­dents’ re­turn, the team has added seven. The school an­nounced Tues­day it was piv­ot­ing to on­line learn­ing for two weeks.

NBA Lak­ers even series; Lil­lard hurts finger

An­thony Davis had 31 points, in­clud­ing 21 in the first half, as the top-seeded Lak­ers topped the Trail Blaz­ers 111-88 in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, evening their first-round play­off series at 1-1 af­ter a stun­ning loss in the opener. Blaz­ers All-Star guard Damian Lil­lard (18 points) dis­lo­cated his left in­dex finger and left the game in the third quar­ter.

† Gian­nis An­te­tok­oun­mpo fin­ished with 28 points and 20 re­bounds and the Bucks built a 23-point lead in the first half on their way to beat­ing the Magic 111-96 and ty­ing their firstround series at a game apiece. Nikola Vuce­vic scored 32 for the Magic.

† James Har­den had 21 points and nine as­sists and the Rock­ets made 19 of an NBArecord 56 three-point at­tempts to beat the Thun­der 111-98 for a 2-0 lead in their series.

† Duncan Robin­son hit his first six shots, all from three-point range, and fin­ished with 24 points to help the Heat beat the Pac­ers 119100 and take a 2-0 lead in their series.

NHL Is­lan­ders send Caps pack­ing

An­thony Beauvil­lier scored twice and Se­myon Var­lamov shut out the team that drafted him as the Is­lan­ders knocked the Cap­i­tals out of the play­offs in the first round with a 4-0 win in Game 5 in Toronto. The Is­lan­ders next face the Light­ning or Bru­ins.

GOLF Four-way tie out front at North­ern Trust

Har­ris English fin­ished with a 7-un­der 64, shar­ing the lead with Kevin Streel­man,

Cameron Davis and Rus­sell Hen­ley af­ter the first round of the North­ern Trust in Norton, Mas­sachusetts. Tiger Woods was four strokes back af­ter open­ing with a 68.

† Amer­i­can Amy Ol­son’s 4-un­der 67 gave her a three-stroke lead in the first round of the Women’s Bri­tish Open in Troon, Scot­land.
