Protests postpone 7 games

-

Seven Major League Baseball games were postponed Thursday to protest racial injustice in the wake of the police shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, on Sunday in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

The Marlins-Mets game in New York was the most dramatic of the postponements, with players from both teams walking off the field after a brief moment of silence, leaving a Black Lives Matter T-shirt draped across home plate as they left.

Outfielder Dominic Smith, who is Black, wept openly Wednesday while discussing the shooting of Blake over the weekend and led the Mets onto the field before the joint action.

‘‘After seeing the comments Dom made last night, it’s not just about Dom, but it really touched all of us in the clubhouse,’’ Mets outfielder Michael Conforto said.

The other games postponed were the Athletics at the Rangers, the Phillies at the Nationals, the Orioles at the Rays, the Twins at the Tigers, the Rockies at the Diamondbacks and the Red Sox at the Blue Jays in Buffalo, New York. Other games were played, as scheduled.

‘‘This is at the forefront now,’’ said A’s infielder Tony Kemp, who is Black. ‘‘By sitting out tonight’s game, I feel like it’s just a small building block of what we want to see. . . . One day, our kids are going to look back and ask us what was going on and what did we do to help bring awareness to these issues in the world, and we’re going to say, ‘One game, we just decided not to play.’ ’’

Blister lands Dodgers’ Buehler on IL

The Dodgers put right-hander Walker Buehler (1-0, 4.32 ERA) on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Sunday, with a blister on his pitching hand. Buehler had his best outing of the shortened season last Friday, allowing one run and striking out 11 in six innings against the Rockies.

Blue Jays deal for Mariners’ Walker

The Mariners traded right-hander Taijuan Walker (2-2, 4.00 ERA) to the Blue Jays for a player to be named or cash.
