Jaguars waive RB Fournette

-

The Jaguars on Monday waived running back Leonard Fournette, a decision many see as the latest in a series of head-scratchers that could help the franchise tank the season and get the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft next spring.

The Jaguars had spent months trying to trade Fournette, the fourth overall pick in 2017, who’s coming off a season in which he carried 265 times for 1,152 yards and caught 76 passes for 522 yards.

‘‘We couldn’t get anything, a fifth[-rounder], a sixth[-rounder], anything,’’ coach Doug Marrone said.

So the Jaguars dumped Fournette, 25, a day after trading former Pro Bowl defensive end Yannick Ngakoue to the Vikings. They also have traded cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye and defensive end Calais Campbell in the last 10 months.

Fournette is due $4.17 million in guaranteed salary this season if someone claims him. If he clears waivers, he would be a free agent.

Chiefs give Veach, Reid extensions

NFL Network reported the Super Bowl champion Chiefs agreed to contract extensions with general manager Brett Veach and coach Andy Reid through the 2025 season. Financial terms of the deals weren’t disclosed.

Both men joined the Chiefs in 2013, with Veach starting as a scout.

This and that

NFL end zones will be inscribed this season with two slogans: ‘‘It Takes All Of Us’’ on one end and ‘‘End Racism’’ on the other. As part of its social-justice initiatives, the NFL will allow similar visuals on helmets and caps.

♦ ESPN reported Chargers safety Derwin James needs surgery on his right knee and will miss six to eight months. James suffered the injury during practice Sunday.

♦ The Texans signed inside linebacker Zach Cunningham to a four-year, $58 million contract extension. He ranked second in the NFL with 137 tackles last season.

♦ Dolphins quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick returned to practice after missing a scrimmage Saturday following his mother’s death.

♦ The Giants signed cornerback Logan Ryan to a one-year contract.
