Joe Rine­hart, Ser­vic­ing Di­rec­tor of the Chicago Painters’ Union, was in­tro­duced to the trade by his grand­fa­ther. Rine­hart be­gan his 32-year trades ca­reer in 1988 as an ap­pren­tice where he crafted his skills in­clud­ing paint­ing, dry­wall fin­ish­ing, wall­cov­er­ing and es­ti­mat­ing jobs. Th­ese skills led to Rine­hart’s elec­tion to the Dis­trict Coun­cil as a busi­ness rep­re­sen­ta­tive.

In his cur­rent role, Rine­hart works on mem­ber is­sues and co­or­di­nates union or­ga­niz­ing in busi­ness and po­lit­i­cal are­nas. “The union has pro­vided me with ev­ery­thing I’ve ever known,” Rine­hart said. “The Amer­i­can dream is to have a good wage, health in­sur­ance for your fam­ily and a se­cure re­tire­ment. My union ca­reer has pro­vided that and more!”
