Ramsey becomes richest CB in NFL
Jalen Ramsey became the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history after agreeing to a five-year, $105 million contract extension with the Rams.
The extension includes $71.2 million, the most guaranteed money ever given to a defensive back.
Ramsey will average $21 million per season, another record for a cornerback or safety. He will make $13.7 million this season in the final year of his rookie contract.
The Rams acquired Ramsey in a trade with the Jaguars midway through last season, giving up two first-round draft picks to secure one of the NFL’s elite cornerbacks. Ramsey had one interception in nine games with the Rams while earning his third consecutive Pro Bowl selection.
Vikings DE Hunter out at least 3 games
The Vikings put defensive end Danielle Hunter on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury, taking one of their most vital players out of action for the season opener against the Packers and at least two more games after that.
Hunter has not practiced with the team since training camp activities were first opened to reporters on Aug. 14. Coach Mike Zimmer has only described the unspecified injury as a “tweak,” and because Hunter was placed on injured reserve the Vikings didn’t have to list the two-time Pro Bowl pick on their initial injury report.
Veteran CB Talib calls it quits
Veteran cornerback Aqib Talib, 34, announced his retirement.
Talib, who was limited to just five games with a rib injury last season with the Rams, said he turned down one last NFL offer from the Patriots because he wasn’t “feeling it.”
The five-time Pro Bowl cornerback who won a Super Bowl with the Broncos in 2015 finishes with 35 career interceptions (tied for first among active players) and 10 pick-sixes (most among active players and fourth all time).
Steelers LB Shazier retires
Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier announced his retirement nearly three years after a spinal injury forced the two-time Pro Bowl player to put his career on hold. The 28-year-old said he still loves the game, but it is time to get on to the next chapter in his life.
Bucs WR Evans uncertain for opener
Buccaneers Pro Bowl wide receiver Mike Evans is day-to-day with a hamstring injury and uncertain to play in the season opener against the Saints on Sunday.
Evans missed the final three games of the 2019 season with a hamstring injury. Niners LB Warner off COVID list
Niners linebacker Fred Warner was taken off the reserve/COVID-19 list and took part in practice. Receivers Deebo Samuel (foot) and Brandon Aiyuk (hamstring) didn’t take part in the open portion of practice and their status remains in doubt this week.
