The Score fires Dan McNeil for ‘degrading’ tweet about ESPN reporter

-

The Score fired controversial afternoon co-host Dan McNeil, one of the station’s original hosts when it launched in 1992, on Tuesday for a “degrading and humiliating” tweet about ESPN’s Maria Taylor the night before.

During the Steelers-Giants game on “Monday Night Football,” McNeil questioned Taylor’s outfit by saying, “NFL sideline reporter or a host for the AVN annual awards presentation?” Adult Video News presents an awards show for the industry.

Though McNeil deleted the tweet, it caught the attention of the Twitter audience, including Taylor, who tweeted, “Well Danny Dearest if you would like to continue making sexist comments about me . . . please bring your misogyny with you to the NBA Countdown double header I’ll be hosting tomorrow night. Hey ladies remember you can wear whatever you feel confident in!”

Entercom Chicago market manager Rachel Williamson announced McNeil’s firing in an email to staff.

“For each one of us, our words have power,” she said. “For our brands and on-air personalities, that is amplified and brings increased responsibility in how we chose to use our voices. Last night’s tweet, and its degrading and humiliating tone to a fellow female broadcaster, was unacceptable.”

McNeil, 59, was on his third tour at The Score, co-hosting with Danny Parkins from 2 to 6 p.m. Parkins hosted alone on Tuesday.

Fangio owns timeout blunder

Coach Vic Fangio took full blame for the Broncos’ much-criticized failure to use any timeouts until there were just two seconds left in their 16-14 loss to the Titans on Monday night. The Titans had the ball for 2:48 of the final 3:05, setting up Stephen Gostkowski for a 25-yard field goal. The Broncos had all three of their timeouts available when the Titans opened their final drive.

“Totally my fault,” Fangio said. He said he didn’t think it was worth using a timeout to try to ice Gostkowski, who had earlier missed three field goals and an extra point.

Bell out until at least Week 5

Jets star running back Le’Veon Bell was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury after being hurt in the second quarter of Sunday’s loss at Buffalo and will miss at least the next three games. That currently leaves 37-year-old Frank Gore as the only healthy running back on the active roster.

Josh Adams was elevated from the practice squad and played against the Bills. He’s likely to be elevated again this week.

Seibert to other side of Ohio

The Bengals claimed former Browns kicker Austin Seibert off waivers but expect Randy Bullock to be ready to play when the teams meet in their rivalry game in Cleveland on Thursday night. Bullock missed a 31-yard field goal with two seconds left Sunday when his left calf cramped, leaving the Bengals with a 16-13 loss to the Chargers.

† The 49ers agreed to a oneyear contract with wide receiver Mohamed Sanu, who was in Atlanta in 2016 when Niners coach Kyle Shanahan was the Falcons’ offensive coordinator.

† The Lions will be without cornerback Justin Coleman against the Packers after he went on injured reserve with a hamstring injury he suffered against the Bears.
