NORTHWESTERN MEDICINE SAYS IT WILL BUILD IN BRONZEVILLE

Northwestern Medicine said Tuesday it intends to build an ambulatory care center in Bronzeville, but key details such as exactly where and when were kept under wraps.

Pending regulatory approvals, the facility will be 75,000 square feet and include an immediate care center and primary and specialty care from Northwestern physicians, said a statement from the 10-hospital network. The facility could partially fill a void in the community if Mercy Hospital and Medical Center follows through on plans to close in 2021.

The area also could get enhanced medical services from a long-term $3.5 billion redevelopment of the former Michael Reese Hospital site at 31st Street and Cottage Grove Avenue. Israel’s Sheba Medical Center plans a research building there.

Scott Goodman, principal of Farpoint Development, which is backing the project at the Reese site, said it has no agreement with Northwestern to build there.

Northwestern’s statement said its building also will include “local food options and space for community programming.”

Spokesman Christopher King declined further comment.

“Approximately 500 construction, health care and related jobs will be created,” the statement said. “When completed, it is expected to draw more than 45,000 patients and family members on an annual basis to the facility and its surrounding retail businesses.”

It said the facility will be in an area targeted for increased investment by Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s Invest South/West initiative.
