Saints triumph in OT

-

Wil Lutz made a 36-yard field goal with 5:08 left in overtime, then the Saints stopped the visiting Chargers on fourth down near midfield to earn a 30-27 victory on ‘‘Monday Night Football.’’

The Chargers had a chance to win on the last play of regulation, but Michael Badgley’s 50-yard field-goal try hit the right upright and missed. Badgley also missed the extra point after the Chargers’ first touchdown.

Drew Brees passed for 325 yards and a 41-yard touchdown to Jared Cook and ran for another score for the Saints (3-2), who got a nine-yard touchdown run from Taysom Hill to tie the score at 27 with 52 seconds left.

Rookie Justin Herbert was spectacular for the Chargers (1- 4), throwing four touchdown passes — including a 64-yarder to Mike Williams — in his fourth NFL start. All four of the Chargers’ losses have been by a touchdown or less.

Prescott still Cowboys’ guy

As far as Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones is concerned, the season-ending injury quarterback Dak Prescott suffered to his right ankle Sunday against the Giants does nothing to change the organization’s thinking about him or his future with the team.

‘‘Absolutely not,’’ Jones said on a Dallas radio station. ‘‘He’s our future. He’s special. If anyone can overcome anything, it would be Dak. This is something that our doctors feel good that he’ll overcome and come back better than ever.’’

Prescott, who had surgery to repair the fractured and dislocated ankle, is set to become an unrestricted free agent after this season after playing on the $31.4 million franchise tag in 2020. The Cowboys can use the tag on him again in March, which would cost $37.7 million, or allow him to test free agency.

† Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said quarterback Baker Mayfield has sore ribs after taking a hit in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Colts, but he is optimistic Mayfield will be able to play Sunday at the rival Steelers.

Falcons name Morris interim coach

The Falcons named defensive coordinator Raheem Morris their interim coach a day after firing Dan Quinn hours after falling to 0-5 with a loss Sunday to the Panthers. Morris is in his sixth season with the Falcons and first as their defensive coordinator. He was 17-31 in three seasons as the Buccaneers’ coach in 2009-11.

Gase might give up play-calling duties

With the Jets at 0-5 and struggling mightily on offense, coach Adam Gase said he is considering handing off play-calling duties. While he wouldn’t commit to doing it Sunday against the Chargers, he said more input from offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains and/or running backs coach Jim Bob Cooter is possible.
