-

A federal grand jury in Fort Worth, Texas, indicted Eric Prescott Kay on drug charges for allegedly providing Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs with the drugs that caused his overdose death. The Maple Leafs signed 41-year-old former Sharks forward Joe Thornton to a one-year, $700,000 contract. Thornton, a six-time All-Star and the 2006 NHL MVP, is the second Ontario-born veteran to sign a league-minimum deal with the Leafs in free agency, joining Jason Spezza.

Xander Schauffele made seven birdies in eight holes, including six in a row, for a career-best 29 on the back nine en route to an 8-under 64 and a three-shot lead (14-under 130) over Tyrrell Hatton after two rounds of the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek in Las Vegas.
