Huskies doomed by turnovers in opening loss to Buffalo

Jaret Patterson had 20 carries for 137 yards and two touchdowns and the Buffalo defense scored three touchdowns in a 49- 30 victory against Northern Illinois in a MidAmerica­n Conference game Wednesday night Huskie Stadium in DeKalb. It was the season debut for both teams.

Ross Bowers had 202 yards passing with one touchdown and one intercepti­on for NIU ( 0- 1). Tyrice Richie had nine receptions for 106 yards.

Patterson opened the scoring with a fiveyard run about three minutes into the game and his 56- yard touchdown with 2: 14 left in the first half gave Buffalo ( 1- 0) a 21- 10 lead.

The junior has a school- record 35 career rushing touchdowns in just 28 games.

Tim Terry Jr. and Isaiah King scored on fumble returns of 46 and 42 yards, respective­ly, and Kadofi Wright had a 65- yard picksix that made it 49- 16 with 12: 14 to play.

Buffalo quarterbac­k Kyle Vantrease completed 11 of 17 passes for 175 yards, including a 17- yard touchdown pass to Antonio Nunn, and scored on a four- yard run. Nunn finished with six catches for 102 yards.

Louisville- Virginia game postponed

Louisville has paused all football activities and its game Saturday at Virginia was postponed at least a week because of a spike in COVID- 19 cases.

Nine Louisville players, mostly on defense, were held out of last week’s 42- 35 loss to Virginia Tech. Coach Scott Satterfiel­d said afterward that some of the absences were COVID- related.

Cal player tests positive, game in jeopardy

California’s season- opening game Saturday night against Washington is in jeopardy following a positive coronaviru­s test that has caused what coach Justin Wilcox said is a “significan­t” number of players needing contact tracing.

Utah coach Kyle Whittingha­m signed a four- year contract extension through the 2027 season. Whittingha­m, the reigning Pac- 12 coach of the year, is starting his 16th season with the Utes.

† Conference USA reschedule­d seven games that were postponed earlier this season because of COVID- 19 issues. All will be played the first two weeks of December.

† Tulane says 350 tickets will be made available for Army’s visit on Nov. 14. The number is expected to increase to 1,350 when Memphis visits on Nov. 28.
