Woman killed in E. Garfield Pk.; 2 men ‘ targeted’ in Lawndale
Two men were critically injured in a shooting Wednesday afternoon near a Lawndale liquor store on the West Side, in what police are calling a “targeted” attack.
They were standing outside the Brother 5 Food & Liquor store, 3009 W. Roosevelt Rd., about 4: 30 p. m. when a silver vehicle pulled up and “stopped right in front of them,” Chicago Police Deputy Chief Ernest Cato said. That’s when three people got out of the car and began to fire shots at the men, Cato said.
The gunmen continued firing inside the liquor store before fleeing the scene, according to Cato.
“They knew exactly who they were shooting at,” Cato said.
A 29- year- old man suffered a gunshot wound to the body, and a 22- year- old man was struck in the back and neck, police said. Both were in critical condition.
Police initially reported a 21- year- old woman was killed in the shooting and another man, 29, was injured, but after further investigation determined those two individuals were the victims of a separate attack in East Garfield Park.
Police sources said the four victims all selftransported to Mount Sinai Hospital around the same time.
In the East Garfield Park incident, the
woman and man were in a southbound vehicle about 4 p. m. when someone in a darkcolored vehicle pulled up next to them in the 400 block of South Hamlin Boulevard and opened fire, Chicago police said.
The woman, who was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai, was identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Catrice Ware.
The man had a gunshot wound to the leg, police said. His condition was stabilized.
