Mahomes’ late TD pass lifts Chiefs past Raiders

-

Patrick Mahomes threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Jason Kelce with 28 seconds left to rally the Chiefs to a 35-31 victory against the Raiders in a back-and-forth thriller Sunday in Las Vegas.

After Derek Carr had given the Raiders (6- 4) a 31-28 lead with a one-yard touchdown pass to Jason Witten with 1:43 left, Mahomes guided a seven-play, 75-yard drive in 75 seconds to help the Chiefs (9-1) avenge their only loss of the season, a 40-32 setback Oct. 11 at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Raiders’ desperate last drive ended after one play when Chiefs safety Daniel Sorensen intercepted a pass by Carr down the left sideline.

Mahomes finished 34-for- 45 for 348 yards, with two touchdowns and an interception. The Chiefs, who are eyeing their fifth AFC West title in a row, also got two touchdown runs from Clyde Edwards-Helaire and one from Le’Veon Bell.

Carr passed for 275 yards and three touchdowns for the Raiders, who led for most of the first half and twice in the fourth quarter.

Washington 20, Bengals 9

Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft last spring, was carted off the field with an injury to his left knee before Alex Smith rallied host Washington to victory.

Burrow was hurt when he was hit high and low by two Washington linemen after throwing a pass early in the third quarter. His left leg bent awkwardly, and he couldn’t put any weight on it. He finished 22-for-34 for 203 yards and a touchdown and left with the Bengals (2-7-1) leading 9-7.

His season appears over, too. After the game, Burrow tweeted: ‘‘Thanks for all the love. Can’t get rid of me that easy. See ya next year.’’

Burrow’s departure enabled Smith and Washington (3-7) to take over and move a half-game behind the Eagles in the battle for first place in the awful NFC East.

Saints 24, Falcons 9

Taysom Hill ran for two touchdowns and passed for 233 yards in his first NFL start at quarterback, and the Saints (8-2) topped the visiting Falcons (3-7) for their seventh victory in a row.

With 41-year- old Drew Brees sidelined for at least three games with multiple rib fractures, Saints coach Sean Payton gave Hill the nod over offseason free-agent acquisition Jameis Winston.

Hill, who started his career as a utility player with the Saints in 2017, looked comfortable running the scheme Payton designed for him during the week. He completed 18 of 23 passes without an interception and ran for a team-high 51 yards.

Titans 30, Ravens 24 (OT)

Derrick Henry ran for a 29-yard touchdown with 5:21 left in overtime to lift the Titans (7-3) past the host Ravens (6-4). He finished with 133 yards for his sixth 100-yard game of the season and eclipsed 1,000 yards for the third consecutive season.

The game marked the NFL return of receiver Dez Bryant, who caught four passes for 28 yards for the Ravens. He last played in the NFL with the Cowboys in December 2017 and was promoted from the Ravens’ practice squad last week.

Browns 22, Eagles 17

Nick Chubb scored on a 54-yard run, Sione Takitaki returned an interception 50 yards for another touchdown and Olivier Vernon notched three sacks and a safety with NFL sacks leader Myles Garrett out with COVID-19 to help the Browns (7-3) fight off the visiting Eagles (3-6-1) in a constant downpour.

Broncos 20, Dolphins 13

Justin Simmons intercepted a pass by Ryan Fitzpatrick in the end zone with 1:03 left to help the host Broncos (4-6) preserve a victory against the Dolphins (6-4). Fitzpatrick was playing after rookie Tua Tagovailoa was removed from the game after he was sacked for a sixth time in the fourth quarter. Tagovailoa was 11-for-20 for 83 yards.
