Late INT by Brady seals loss
Matt Gay kicked a tiebreaking 40-yard field goal with 2:36 left, and Jordan Fuller intercepted a pass by Tom Brady with 1:49 to play to preserve the visiting Rams’ 27-24 victory Monday against the Buccaneers. It was Fuller’s second interception of the game.
Jared Goff completed 39 of 51 passes — one completion short of the ‘‘Monday Night Football’’ record set by the Bengals’ Ken Anderson in 1982 — for 376 yards and three touchdowns for the Rams (7-3), but he also was intercepted twice. His second interception led to a 13-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Chris Godwin that pulled the Bucs (7- 4) into a 24-24 tie with 3:53 left.
In addition to his two interceptions, Brady also threw two touchdown passes to pass injured Saints quarterback Drew Brees for the most in NFL history with 566. The two have been trading the record all season.
Burrow’s knee injury severe
ESPN reported Bengals rookie quarterback Joe Burrow suffered torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments and other structural injuries in his left knee Sunday against Washington. Bengals coach Zac Taylor didn’t discuss the extent of Burrow’s injuries, other than to say he will have surgery and should be ready for the 2021 season.
Burrow, the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft last spring, was carted off the field in the third quarter and later tweeted a message that read, in part, ‘‘See ya next year.’’
Knee injuries of Burrow’s type usually sideline players from nine to 12 months, which puts his status for the start of next season in question. He suffered the injury after being sandwiched by two defenders.
COVID news
The NFL expanded its mandate for mask usage on the sideline and is threatening discipline for those who violate its updated COVID-19 protocols.
The league told teams in a memo that, starting this week, players who aren’t substituting or preparing to enter the field of play and aren’t wearing their helmets will be required to wear a mask or a double-layered gaiter on the sideline.
♦ The Browns said defensive end Myles Garrett, who missed the team’s game Sunday against the Eagles after testing positive for the coronavirus Friday, will remain on the COVID-19 list this week and won’t play Sunday against the Jaguars. Coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t provide any details about Garrett’s condition.
♦ Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney will miss the rest of the season after being diagnosed with an inflamed heart, which is considered an aftereffect of COVID-19. Coach Sean McDermott said a team doctor discovered Sweeney had myocarditis during a test to determine whether he could practice again.
♦ The Vikings put receiver Adam Thielen on the COVID-19 list in the wake of their game Sunday against the Cowboys. Thielen leads the NFL with 11 touchdown receptions, the most in Vikings history through the first 10 games.
♦ The Ravens said they were informed late Sunday that ‘‘multiple’’ members of their organization, including running backs J.K. Dobbins and Mark Ingram, tested positive for COVID-19 before their game Sunday against the Titans.
Seahawks put tight end Olsen on IR
The Seahawks put veteran tight end Greg Olsen on injured reserve after he suffered a torn plantar fascia in his left foot Thursday against the Cardinals.
