MIDWEST FISHING REPORT

-

LAKEFRONT PERCH: Center of action remains Calumet system and South Side slips, though a few perch are being caught at North Side harbors. Security enforcement of fishing private property remains variable on South Side. Boaters doing better (able to move) than shore anglers. Mike Hanson of Starved Rock Guide Service messaged a photo of perch 23 feet deep on his screen. ‘‘It was a slugfest,’’ he wrote. Boater Kyle Danhausen caught one jumbo at 14.5 inches. Arden Katz counted 60 rigs at the Cal Harbor launch, and he caught perch ‘‘almost at will’’ at the South Side slips. Perch averaged 8 inches, with a few 10s from shore. He uses a double Mini-Mite rig with a pencil weight. ‘‘I shake it and hold it,’’ he said. ‘‘When I hold it is when they bite.’’ Park Bait: A few perch outside of Montrose and in harbor. Slez’s: Extra-large fatheads and baby roaches best bait. CHAIN: Water is extremely low, so use caution launching or navigating channels. Triangle: Some crappie in mouths of channels at Pistakee. Other crappie suspended in 30 feet, down 18.

DOWNSTATE: SOUTHERN ILLINOIS: Jason Johns: Crappie are excellent. ‘‘You can catch them in 1 foot to 14 on jigs,’’ he said. Rend Lake best, Lake of Egypt fair.

FOX RIVER: See FOTW on muskie. Pete Lamar: Multiple species active on a tributary over the weekend.

GREEN LAKE, WISCONSIN: Mike Norris: BIG GREEN: Slow-trolling live bait is catching smallmouth to 20 inches, with bonus pike and walleye. FOX: Shore anglers getting crappie and perch on minnows under a float. KANKAKEE RIVER: George Peters: Water low and in upper 30s. Smallmouth tough; try deep holes. Walleye still biting.

LAKEFRONT: Perch at top. Park Bait: Able to reach the shop through Montrose gate, just in and out. Plans to remain open until end of month or first week of December. A few steelhead and browns, even some coho. Salmon Stop: Guys on government pier at Waukegan getting a few browns and steelhead on the bottom. A few boaters working in 45 to 75 feet for nice lakers from Waukegan to ComEd plant.

NORTHWEST INDIANA: Perch at top. Slez’s: Lakers at Portage and Michigan City (boat and shore) on bladebaits or jigging spoons. Steelhead in lower Salt and Little Cal on Voodoo jigs tipped with waxworms.
