Ex-Bears safety Paul hospitalized in Texas

-

The Cowboys canceled practice Tuesday after what they said was a non- coronavirus medical emergency involving one of their strength and conditioning coaches.

The Cowboys said former Bears safety Markus Paul ‘‘experienced a medical emergency’’ at their training facility in Frisco, Texas, where he immediately was treated by team medical personnel before being taken by ambulance to a hospital.

An update later in the day said that ‘‘per the Paul family, Markus is in the process of undergoing further medical tests.’’ It said additional information would be made available at the ‘‘appropriate time.’’

Paul, 54, played in 70 games for the Bears in 1989-93 and had seven interceptions. He is in his third season with the Cowboys after previously being a strength and conditioning coach with the Saints, Patriots, Jets and Giants.

Manning tops list of Hall semifinalists

Quarterback Peyton Manning, cornerback Charles Woodson, defensive end Jared Allen and receiver Calvin Johnson were first-yeareligible players to make the list of 25 semifinalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s class of 2021.

Joining them were four players who previously had been eligible but never made the semifinals: cornerback Eric Allen, receiver Willie Anderson, linebacker Cornelius Bennett and safety Rodney Harrison.

A player must be retired for five seasons before being considered for enshrinement in Canton, Ohio.

Candidates will be trimmed to 15 modernday finalists who will be considered for entry by the selection committee during Super Bowl week in February.

Injury report

The Browns said cornerback Denzel Ward, who leads the NFL in passes defended, will miss an unspecified amount of time with a strained calf muscle suffered Sunday against the Eagles.

The team already had said defensive end Myles Garrett would miss his second consecutive game Sunday against the Jaguars as he recovers from COVID-19.

† Patriots running back Rex Burkhead said

the knee injury he suffered Sunday against the Texans will keep him out for the rest of the season. He was carted off the field in the third quarter after a knee-to-helmet collision with Texans cornerback Bradley Roby.

† The Titans put linebacker Jayon Brown (dislocated left elbow) and left tackle Ty Sambrailo (unspecified injury) on injured reserve. Brown will miss the rest of the season, but Sambrailo can return after missing at least three games.

† The Jaguars put defensive end Josh Allen (knee), cornerback D.J. Hayden (hamstring) and safety Daniel Thomas (arm) on injured reserve. Hayden won’t be eligible to return this season because he already spent one stint on IR.

† The Jets put running back La’Mical Perine (high ankle sprain) and kicker Sam Ficken (groin) on injured reserve. Both can return after missing at least three games.

Two suspended for PED violations

The NFL suspended Cowboys linebacker and special-teams player Luke Gifford and injured 49ers cornerback K’Waun Williams for two games without pay for violating its policy on performance-enhancing substances.
