Illinois holds off Ohio

Ayo Dosunmu scored 24 points, KofiCockbu­rn had 13 points and 11 rebounds for his 15th double-double in 35 games and No. 8 Illinois rallied to beat Ohio 77-75 on Friday at State Farm Center in Champaign.

The Bobcats went ahead 71-67 on Jason Preston’s free throw with 1:56 remaining. Dosunmu tied it at 71 with a three-pointer, and Da’MonteWilli­ams put the Illini (3-0) ahead 74-73 on a three with 35 seconds left.

Wilson hit a jumper with 7.9 seconds left to give Ohio its last lead. After a timeout, Dosumnu was fouled going to the basket and sank both free throws to put Illinois up 76-75 with two seconds remaining.

Preston had a game-high 31 points for the Bobcats (2-1).

Ohio forced Illinois into an uncharacte­ristic 16 turnoversw­hile only committing seven.

† Luka Garza had 41 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots, and host No. 5 Iowa beat Southern 103-76. Garza was 14-for-15 from the field, making all three of his three-point attempts, and was 10-for-12 on free throws for the Hawkeyes (2-0).

† San Francisco pulled the biggest upset of the young season, using a late 8-0 run to beat No. 4 Virginia 61-60 in the Homelight Classic. USF’s last win against a top-five team was Dec. 29, 1981.

† No. 3 Villanova added a third game at Connecticu­t’s “Bubblevill­e” (Saturday at the Mohegan Sun arena against Virginia Tech). Temple had been scheduled to be the Hokies’ opponent, but it paused activities for 14 days after a positive coronaviru­s test.

† Arizona canceled its home game Sunday againstUTE­P after a positive test in the Miners’ program.
