DePaul’s season ends with loss to UConn

Javon Freeman-Liberty led 11th-seeded DePaul with 19 points, but the Blue Demons were eliminated from the Big East Tournament with a 94-60 loss to third-seeded UConn in the quarterfin­als Thursday night at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Ray Salnave added 10 points and Charlie Moore eight for the Blue Demons.

The Huskies took the lead for good at 10-7 on a three-pointer by R.J. Cole, and they ballooned the margin to 45-22 with a 16-2 run to close the first half.

Tyrese Martin had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and UConn picked up its fifth consecutiv­e win and seventh in eight games. UConn will face No. 17 and second-seeded Creighton in the second semifinal on Friday night.

Rutgers 61, Indiana 50

Ron Harper Jr. and Jacob Young scored 13 points each as the Scarlet Knights knocked the tenth-seeded Hoosiers out of the second round of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapol­is.

Rutgers was seeded seventh in the tournament, its highest seed ever, and will square off against third-ranked Illinois in a quarterfin­al Friday. Rutgers beat the Illini 91-88 in their only meeting this season.

Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 19 points to lead Indiana, but six came after halftime.

Maryland 68, Michigan State 57

Eric Ayala scored 21 points, Aaron Wiggins added 19 and the Terrapins dominated the Spartans in the second half. The Terrapins face No. 4 Michigan in the quarterfin­als. The Wolverines won both regular-season matchups by a combined 35 points.

Ohio State 79, Minnesota 75

Duane Washington Jr. and Justice Sueing each scored 16 points, and the No. 9 Buckeyes fended off the Gophers’ late charge. The Buckeyes advanced to face No. 21 Purdue in the quarterfin­als.

Wisconsin 75, Penn State 74

Aleem Ford scored 17 points and the Badgers made a stop on the last play to escape with the win over the Nittany Lions in the second round.

Duke’s season over after positive test

Duke pulled out of the ACC Tournament because of a positive COVID-19 case within the program.

“This will end our 2020-21 season,” Duke athletics director Kevin White said.

Also, North Carolina A&T pulled out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament and ended its season because of a positive COVID-19 test within the program.
