49ers deal up to snag third pick
The 49ers made a big move to grab their quarterback of the future by trading up with the Dolphins to acquire the No. 3 pick in the draft next month.
The Niners announced Friday they dealt their No. 12 pick along with first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 and their compensatory third-rounder in 2022 to get the third overall pick.
The Dolphins then immediately traded the 12th pick, the 123rd pick and their own 2022 first-rounder to the Eagles for the Nos. 6 and 156 picks in the draft.
The trade by the 49ers puts them in position to draft a quarterback, with Zach Wilson, Justin Fields and Trey Lance all possibilities. The Jaguars are expected to take Trevor Lawrence first, and the Jets could take a quarterback at No. 2.
Drafting a quarterback likely would lead to the end of Jimmy Garoppolo’s tenure in San Francisco, either in a trade this season or after a year if the team opts to keep a veteran to help ease the transition for a rookie.
For the Dolphins, the trade signals they’re not in the market for another potential franchise quarterback and will stake their future on Tua Tagovailoa. By trading back up to No. 6, the Dolphins still will be in position to draft one of the top receivers or offensive tackles to give Tagovailoa more help.
The deal the Eagles made clears the way for them to get a good look at Jalen Hurts as the starting quarterback this season while adding a potential starter at another spot with pick No. 12.
CHARGERS PICK UP DANIEL
The Chargers agreed to terms on a oneyear deal with Chase Daniel, finding a veteran to back up Justin Herbert at quarterback.
Daniel is reunited with coach Brandon Staley and offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi. Staley and Daniel were together with the Bears in 2018, and Lombardi was his quarterbacks coach with the Saints.
Daniel has appeared in 69 games with five starts over 11 seasons, throwing for 1,694 yards and eight touchdowns. He played in four games for the Lions last season.
FOURNETTE, BUCS AGREE ON CONTRACT
The Buccaneers moved closer to a goal of retaining all 22 starters from their Super Bowl victory, agreeing to a one-year, $3.25 million contract to bring free-agent running back Leonard Fournette back for next season. The deal reportedly could be worth up to $4 million with incentives.
LATTIMORE ARRESTED ON GUN CHARGE
Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore was arrested in his hometown of Cleveland on suspicion of possessing a loaded handgun that had been reported stolen, police said. He was a passenger in a car pulled over Thursday night for “multiple traffic violations,” a spokesperson for the Cleveland Police Department said.
