Engel, Elaine Dunn

Elaine Dunn Engel passed away on Sunday, April 4, at the age of 96 after several years of failing health. Elaine was born in Milwaukee to Dr. Robert and Celia Smuckler. An outstanding student, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Wisconsin. While there, she met and married her first husband and they lived in Shorewood (Wisconsin) with their 2 sons. After the marriage ended, Elaine moved to Evanston in 1960 to begin graduate studies in speech pathology, at Northwestern University, ultimately earning her PhD. While on the faculty at Northwestern, she met and married Dr. Arthur Dunn, a dentist with an office in Glencoe. Together they and their extended family had many adventures including scuba diving, sailing, and skiing. After 19 years of marriage, Dr. Dunn succumbed to a service-related illness. Several years later Elaine married Dr. Milton Engel and for the next 25 years they lived comfortably in Wilmette, while engaging in numerous travel excursions. Elaine pioneered private practice for speech pathology and maintained an office in Evanston as well as consulting at St. Francis hospital. She maintained an active presence in the Illinois Speech Pathology association and with Alternatives in Education for the Deaf and the Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School of which it is a part. She is survived by her loving family including her two sons, Jeffrey and Vance Liebman, her stepsons Fredrick and Daniel Dunn, her stepdaughters Charlotte Dunn, Nanci Karlin, and Louis and Katherine Engel, a combined 15 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations in her memory may be sent to the Alexander Graham Bell Montessori School at www.agbms.org which Elaine supported as a board member for many years.
