Truex wins in Martinsville

-

Martin Truex Jr. won a laps-long duel for the lead with Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Denny Hamlin on his way to capturing the NASCAR Cup Series race Sunday at Martinsville (Virginia) Speedway. The race originally was scheduled for Saturday, but it was rained out after 42 laps.

Truex, who nudged Hamlin repeatedly in the turns and tried to get to his inside on the straightaways without success, finally made the pass with 15 laps left, then sailed off to victory without another serious challenge. He beat runner-up Chase Elliott to the finish line by nearly two seconds to win for the third time in the last four races at the track.

Hamlin finished third, followed by William Byron and Kyle Larson.

Stroman upset Mets started game in rain

Mets right-hander Marcus Stroman was unhappy the team began its game against the Marlins in a steady rain, and he threw only nine pitches before play was stopped.

The game eventually was suspended after a wait of 2 hours, 10 minutes. Only two players batted, with Corey Dickerson leading off with a single before Starling Marte flied out.

Home teams decide whether to start games. Once a game begins, umpires decide whether to stop it because of bad weather.

‘‘This game should have never been started. Not smart at all,’’ Stroman tweeted during the delay. ‘‘Those conditions put everyone at risk. Beyond happy no players on either side were injured. Hate that I have to wait another 5 days to pitch again. That’s a miserable feeling.’’
