Streaking Braves hand O’s their 18th straight loss
Jorge Soler homered and Touki Toussaint pitched effectively into the sixth inning to lead the Braves to a 3-1 victory against the Orioles on Sunday in Baltimore.
The Orioles’ losing streak is now 18 games, the longest in the majors since the Royals dropped 19 in a row in 2005. This was only the third time during this streak that the Orioles lost by two runs or fewer. The Orioles are now three losses from matching a franchise and American League record of 21 consecutive losses set in 1988.
Adam Duvall added a two-run double for National League East-leading Atlanta, which has won nine in a row and 16 of its last 18. The Braves also have won a franchise-record 13 consecutive road games.
“I have no problem with effort,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “We’re not winning games. We’re not executing.”
Mets 7, Dodgers 2
Javy Baez, who missed 11 games with back spasms, had two doubles in his return to the lineup for the visiting Mets.
“Even when I was out, I was trying to bring my energy and bring my happiness to the team, to the dugout,” Baez said. “I know we’re going through a struggle right now. I think we’ve got the talent to be up there, and I hope it comes back to us pretty soon.”
The Dodgers, whose second nine-game winning streak was snapped, fell 2½ games behind the Giants in the NL West. The Giants became the first team to 80 wins with a 2-1 victory against the host Athletics.
Indians 3, Angels 0
Cal Quantrill pitched two-hit ball over seven innings and Amed Rosario launched an early homer to lead the Indians in the Little League Classic in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Before the game, MLB announced that the Red Sox and Orioles will meet in the 2022 Little League Classic.
Phillies 7, Padres 4
Rhys Hoskins homered twice in his first game since going on the injured list Aug. 10 with a strained groin, and Kyle Gibson pitched eight strong innings to lift the visiting Phillies. The Padres, who had been in a playoff spot for 106 games, have lost nine of 11 and dropped a game behind the Reds in the race for the second NL wild card.
