Trout may miss rest of season

-

Angels manager Joe Maddon said Monday that outfielder Mike Trout is experiencing soreness in his right calf after running the bases Saturday and that discussions about shutting him down for the rest of the season are rapidly approaching.

Trout hasn’t played since May 17 after going on the injured list with a strained right calf. The original prognosis was that he would miss six to eight weeks, but he has been out for more than three months.

Maddon also said two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani won’t pitch Tuesday against the Yankees to give his right hand extra time to heal. Ohtani was hit in the hand by a pitch in the first inning Saturday against the Padres.

Indians catcher Wilson Ramos suffered torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee on what appeared to be a routine fielding play Sunday against the Red Sox and will need season-ending surgery.

Lester pitches Cardinals past Reds

Jon Lester allowed one run and one hit in 6„ innings and retired the last 16 batters he faced, Paul Goldschmidt homered and the visiting Cardinals topped the Reds 3-1.

Lester (5-6) struck out five and walked two on his way to his 198th career victory. He is 2-1 in six starts since the Cardinals got him in a trade with the Nationals.

Rays’ winning streak reaches eight

Brandon Lowe drove in two runs with a home run and a single, and the host Rays extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-1 victory against the Red Sox.

Before the game, the Red Sox put lefthander Martin Perez, who tested positive for the coronavirus, and right-hander Matt Barnes on the COVID-19 injured list.

Vlad Jr. smacks two HRs in Jays’ victory

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit two homers — a solo shot and a three-run blast — to boost his season total to 38, and Robbie Ray (10-5) struck out 10 in seven innings in the Blue Jays’ 7-3 victory against the visiting Orioles, who fell to 3-24 in August.
