Bauer won’t pitch again this season

-

Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer will miss the rest of the season after MLB and the players’ association extended his paid administrative leave Friday through the World Series.

Bauer was put on seven days’ paid leave July 2 under the union and MLB’s joint domestic violence and sexual-assault policy after a Southern California woman said he choked her into unconsciousness, punched her repeatedly and had anal sex with her without her consent during two sexual encounters earlier this year. MLB reportedly is not expected to decide on a potential suspension until the offseason.

Bauer had a record of 8-2 and a 2.59 ERA in 17 appearances in his first season with the Dodgers. He’ll be paid his $28 million salary.

Asked if Bauer will ever pitch for the Dodgers again, manager Dave Roberts said, “I have no idea. I just really haven’t given any thought to that.”

Jose Barrero doubled in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning, leading the Reds over the Cardinals 4-2. Both teams are vying for the second wild-card spot. The Reds entered trailing the Padres by a game for the second spot, and the Cardinals were three games behind San Diego.

Lorenzo Cain hit a grand slam to cap a six-run fifth inning, Eduardo Escobar homered from both sides of the plate and the Brewers beat the Indians 10-3 to trim their magic number to win the division to nine.

Rookie Tylor Megill struck out a career-high 10 in a career-high seven innings and the Mets took advantage of a string of mental and physical mistakes by the reeling Yankees to rout their Bronx rival 10-3.

Rays rookie Wander Franco extended his on-base streak to 39 games, then exited in the first inning in a 10-4 loss to the Tigers because of tightness in his right hamstring.

MLB suspended Nationals starting pitcher Sean Nolin five games for intentionally hitting Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman on Wednesday. Manager Dave Martinez was suspended for one game.

Former Cubs pitcher Mike Montgomery, who pitches for the Samsung Lions, was ejected from a KBO game after being warned by umpires about the league’s 12-second pitch rule. As he was being guided toward the dugout, he charged toward the umpire but was restrained by teammates. He then fired a rosin bag at the back of the umpire, who was talking to the Lions’ manager.
