Jets getting QB Wilson back

-

Zach Wilson is back — and just in time for the Jets.

The No. 2 overall pick reportedly will return as the starting quarterback Sunday against the host Texans. Wilson missed the last four games with a sprained posterior collateral ligament in his right knee.

Wilson returning to action comes just as backup quarterbacks Mike White and Joe Flacco both were put on the reserve/COVID-19 list. That leaves just Wilson and Josh Johnson, who’s on the practice squad, at the quarterback position. Johnson likely will be promoted to the active roster to serve as Wilson’s backup against the Texans.

Coach Robert Saleh said Monday the Jets would evaluate Wilson’s knee before making a decision by Wednesday morning on whether the rookie quarterback would be able to play. The knee reportedly checked out.

Flacco said last week he is not vaccinated. White’s vaccination status was not immediately known. Flacco got the start Sunday in a 24-17 loss to Miami, doing a solid job by throwing for 291 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

Rodgers talks about his toe

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers elaborated on his toe injury on his weekly appearance on Pat McAfee’s podcast, hinting that he has a bone bruise on his pinkie toe.

“I believe that I mentioned that it was more painful than turf toe, and I had turf toe two years ago,” Rodgers said. “The problem with turf toe is it’s that joint in your big toe, and it is very painful. So naturally, I’m leading people to understand that if it’s worse than turf toe, there must be some sort of bone issue. Again, it’s better the fifth toe than the first toe or even the second or the third or probably the fourth toe.

“I have a toe injury that’s not going away, and I’m going to be dealing with it at least the next few weeks.”

“One option that’s not on the table is sitting out. I’m going to push through this,” Rodgers said.

Giants fire OC Garrett

In an effort to spark an anemic offense with the season teetering on the brink of fiasco, the Giants fired offensive coordinator Jason Garrett after a dreadful 30-10 loss in a nationally televised game Monday against the Buccaneers. Judge said the coaching staff would combine to make an offensive game plan against the visiting Eagles on Sunday. Former Browns coach and current senior offensive assistant Freddie Kitchens has experience and reportedly will call plays.

Titans cut Peterson

The Titans waived 2012 NFL MVP Adrian Peterson after three games. He was signed originally to the Titans’ practice squad on Nov. 2 to help replace Derrick Henry and was promoted to the active roster two days before a victory against the Rams. Peterson started two games and had 27 carries for 82 yards and a 3.0-yard average per rushing attempt and one touchdown run.
