Cats put up fight in loss to Buckeyes
E.J. Liddell scored a careerhigh 34 points and host No. 13 Ohio State beat Northwestern 95-87 on Sunday.
Liddell scored 17 points in the first five minutes, including a career-high five three-pointers in that span. He set a personal best in field goals made, finishing 12for-20 from the field.
The Wildcats (8-5, 1-3 Big Ten) trimmed a 12-point halftime deficit to six with 37 seconds left.
The Buckeyes (10-3, 4-1) made just one field goal in the final 6:13 but held off Northwestern’s comeback bid at the free-throw line.
Ohio State knocked down 11 foul shots in the final three minutes and finished 26-for-27 from the line.
Three Wildcats scored at least 20 points as their losing streak extended to three. Ty Berry led Northwestern with 23 points.
♦ Trayce Jackson-Davis (13 points and 12 rebounds) led five players in double figures for host Indiana in a 73-60 win against visiting Minnesota. The Hoosiers (123, 3-2) are 11-0 in Assembly Hall this season.
♦ The administrators who manage the College Football Playoff will report on the progress of expansion talks to a presidential oversight committee on Monday. Executive Director Bill Hancock said the group has made progress, but gave no indication on whether a consensus was reached on a new format.
HOCKEY Wolves rally past Monsters
Stefan Noesen and Andrew Poturalski scored in the third period and the Wolves held the Cleveland Monsters without a shot in the period for a 4-3 victory at Allstate Arena.
The Wolves, (22-5-1-1) who won for the 14th time in 15 games, didn’t allow a shot for an entire period for just the second time in their 28-year history.
♦ The NHL postponed the Lightning’s game at the Devils and the Senators’ game at the Oilers on Monday night because of COVID-19 issues. The Devils and Oilers are the teams affected by COVID.
MISCELLANEOUS Klay returns to help Warriors
Klay Thompson scored 17 points in 20 minutes in his return from two devastating injuries that sidelined him more than 2½ years, helping the host Warriors beat the Cavaliers 96-82.
♦ The Pistons are acquiring 7-foot-2 Bol Bol from the Nuggets for Rodney McGruder and second-round pick, sources told ESPN.
♦ Cameron Smith shot an 8-under 65 to beat Jon Rahm by one shot in winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii. Smith finished at 34-under 258, a tournament record by three shots.
♦ Rachel Balkovec, 34, will manage the Low-A team for the New York Yankees this season, making her the first female skipper in affiliated professional baseball, according to a report by The Athletic.
