Dusty earns 2,000th win

-

Astros manager Dusty Baker won his 2,000th game Tuesday night, becoming the 12th manager in major-league history and the first Black man to reach the milestone.

The benchmark victory came in the Astros’ 4-0 win over the visiting Mariners and more than 29 years after Baker collected his first win on April 9, 1993, in the Giants’ 2-1 victory over the Cardinals.

Ten of the 11 other managers who have accumulated at least 2,000 wins are in the Hall of Fame. Bruce Bochy (2,003), who isn’t yet eligible, is the only exception.

Baker’s career record is 2,000-1,745, and he’s the only manager in major-league history to take five different teams to the postseason.

He collected 840 wins in 10 years with the Giants, 322 in four seasons with the Cubs, 509 in six years with the Reds, 192 in two seasons with the Nationals and has 137 in his tenure with the Astros.

Yankees’ winning streak at 11

Aaron Judge homered and drove in three runs, Jameson Taillon allowed one run in six innings and the visiting Yankees extended their winning streak to 11 games by beating the Blue Jays 9-1.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a two-run homer in the ninth, his fifth of the season. The Yankees lead the majors with 34 home runs, including 23 in the last 11 games. Judge’s homer was his ninth, tying teammate Anthony Rizzo for the big-league lead.

Twins win fourth in a row

Ryan Jeffers hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the sixth, and the surging Twins defeated the host Orioles 7-2 for their fourth straight victory. The Twins have won 12 of 13 to move six games over .500 (15-9). They’ve outscored the opposition 63-25 in the 13-game run, including 25-7 during the winning streak.

Reds put Votto on COVID list

The Reds put first baseman Joey Votto on the COVID-19 injured list, though manager David Bell said he hasn’t tested positive for the virus. Votto was in the original starting lineup to face the Brewers but showed symptoms. He’s hitting .122 with no home runs.
