Avs outlast Oilers to open Western final

J.T. Compher scored twice, Cale Makar had a goal and two assists and the host Avalanche held off the Oilers 8-6 in a fast-paced, no-lead-felt-safe Game 1 of the Western Conference final. The Avalanche’s eight goals were tied for the most in a playoff game in franchise history.

Even Colorado’s four-goal lead in the second period hardly felt secure in a matchup between the two highest-scoring teams in the postseason. The win wasn’t in hand until Gabriel Landeskog’s empty-net goal with 21.4 seconds remaining.

Rafael Nadal beat Novak Djokovic 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) in a four-hour monumental match in the quarterfin­als to move a step closer to his 14th championsh­ip at the claycourt Grand Slam tournament and 22nd major trophy overall.

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff reached the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over former U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens in the quarterfin­als.

Three months after declaring he was “fully committed” to the PGA Tour, Dustin Johnson is among 42 players in the field for next week’s LIV Golf Invitation­al, which offers $25 million in prize money that’s backed by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Phil Mickelson was missing from the list that was released Tuesday night.
