Bears add NT Pennel

- Jason Lieser, Sun-Times wires

The Bears added veteran nose tackle Mike Pennel on Monday and made room for him on their roster by cutting defensive end Jeremiah Attaochu.

Pennel, 31, has played eight seasons and appeared in 10 games for the Falcons in 2021. He started seven games for the Jets in 2018 but has been a full-time reserve since.

Pennel was with the Bears last summer but went on injured reserve and was cut before the season started. He signed in time for the team’s mandatory minicamp, which runs Tuesday through Thursday.

Attaochu, 29, played five games for the Bears last season before tearing a pectoral muscle and missing the rest of it. He said last week he was looking forward to establishing a role in the new defense under coach Matt Eberflus and coordinator Alan Williams.

Attaochu’s departure means the Bears are down to one union rep: tight end Cole Kmet.

♦ Multiple outlets reported Commanders receiver Terry McLaurin won’t report to the team’s mandatory minicamp this week as talks about a contract extension continue.

McLaurin’s rookie contract expires after this season, and he’s seeking a new deal in line with what other top receivers have gotten this offseason after catching 77 passes for 1,053 yards and five touchdowns in 2021.

♦ Packers receiver Allen Lazard signed his restricted free-agent tender and will make $3.986 million this season. Lazard, who caught 40 passes for 513 yards and eight touchdowns last season, will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next spring.

NBA Grizzlies give coach Jenkins extension

The Grizzlies and coach Taylor Jenkins agreed to terms on a multiyear contract extension. Terms weren’t disclosed. Jenkins finished second in the NBA’s Coach of the Year voting this season to the Suns’ Monty Williams and led the Grizzlies to the secondbest regular-season record in the league.

♦ Multiple outlets reported the Nuggets are trading forward JaMychal Green and a protected first-round pick in the 2027 draft to the Thunder for the 30th pick in the draft June 23 and two future second-round picks. He averaged 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds this season.

♦ The Cavaliers promoted assistant Greg Buckner to associate head coach under J.B. Bickerstaff.

MLB Strasburg back to IL after one start

Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg is headed back to the injured list because he felt discomfort after throwing a bullpen session Saturday. He made his lone start of the season Thursday against the Marlins, his first since he had surgery last summer for thoracic outlet syndrome.
