L.A. BISHOP KILLED BLOCKS FROM CHURCH

LOS ANGELES — A Catholic bishop in Southern California was shot and killed Saturday just blocks from a church, a slaying of a longtime priest hailed as a “peacemaker” that’s stunned the Los Angeles religious community, authoritie­s said.

Detectives are investigat­ing the death of Bishop David O’Connell as a homicide, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Department.

Authoritie­s have not said whether the bishop was targeted in the shooting or if his religion was a factor in the killing. The sheriff ’s department would not say how or specifical­ly where his body was discovered. The shooter — or shooters — remain at large.

O’Connell, 69, had been a priest for 45 years and was a native of Ireland, according to Angelus News, the archdioces­e’s news outlet.

Tom Sizemore in critical condition

LOS ANGELES — Tom Sizemore was in critical condition after suffering a brain aneurysm, a representa­tive for the actor said Sunday.

Sizemore suffered the aneurysm around 2 a.m. Saturday at his home in Los Angeles. He was hospitaliz­ed in intensive care, his manager Charles Lago said. Lago described Sizemore’s condition “a wait and see situation.”

Sizemore, 61, has acted in films including “Saving Private Ryan,” “Heat” and “Black Hawk Down.” He also has had a history of drug abuse and run-ins with law enforcemen­t.

Ant-Man opens big at box office with $104M for ‘Quantumani­a’

NEW YORK — Phase five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe may have gotten off to a rocky start, but Ant-Man is bigger than ever at the box office.

“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumani­a” opened with $104 million in domestic ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday, easily surpassing the box-office debuts of the previous two Ant-Man films. The Walt Disney Co.’s “Quantumani­a” added another $121.3 million overseas to give the pint-sized hero a $225 million global launch.

It’s easily the largest opening of the year so far.
