Commanders’ Snyder facing peer scrutiny
Commanders owner Daniel Snyder’s future is on the agenda for discussion at upcoming committee meetings in Florida before the annual NFL meeting in Arizona in late March, a person familiar with the docket said.
The person, who spoke with the Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday, said voting to oust Snyder if he chooses not to sell the team remains a possibility.
At a league meeting in October, Colts owner Jim Irsay said there’s ‘‘merit to remove’’ Snyder. It would take an unprecedented vote of 24 of the other 31 owners for that to happen.
Two weeks after Irsay’s comments and with multiple investigations ongoing into the Commanders’ workplace culture and finances, Snyder and wife Tanya hired a firm to ‘‘consider possible transactions.’’ Asked at the time if the Snyders were considering selling part or all of the team, a spokesperson said, ‘‘We’re exploring all options.’’
Quarterback news
The Falcons released quarterback Marcus Mariota after benching him as their starter late last season. Mariota signed a two-year deal with the Falcons in free agency last offseason and went 5-8 as their starter before being replaced by rookie Desmond Ritter.
Multiple outlets reported the Panthers will meet with former Raiders quarterback Derek Carr this week. Carr, who was released by the Raiders on Feb. 14, already has met with the Saints and Jets since becoming a free agent.
The 49ers said the surgery to repair the ulnar collateral ligament in quarterback Brock Purdy’s right (throwing) elbow could take place next week if the swelling in the joint has subsided.
Coaching news
The Eagles hired former Bears defensive coordinator Sean Desai to the same position and promoted quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson to offensive coordinator. Desai spent nine seasons as a coach with the Bears and was their defensive coordinator in 2021 before joining the Seahawks last season.
Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier informed the team he is taking the coming season off but plans to return in 2024.
This and that
Multiple outlets reported the Buccaneers plan to release running back Leonard Fournette before the start of the new league year March 15.
The Giants reportedly have told receiver Kenny Golladay he will be released two seasons into his four-year contract.
