Another setback for Lions’ Williams

-

Lions coach Dan Campbell said Thursday that receiver Jameson Williams likely will miss the rest of the preseason with a hamstring injury.

Williams’ injury is another setback for the former Alabama star, who was injured for much of his rookie season and will be suspended for the first six games this year for violating the NFL’s gambling policy.

He grabbed his right hamstring while running a pass route Wednesday, left the field and did not return. He hurt his left leg earlier in training camp and missed four practices. Amon-Ra St. Brown also was hurt Wednesday, but Campbell said he is expected to be back next week after injuring his right ankle in a 7-on-7 drill.

♦ Buccaneers receiver Russell Gage will miss the season after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee during a joint practice session with the Jets on Wednesday. Gage, who had 51 catches for 426 yards and a career-high five touchdowns last season in his first year with Tampa Bay, was expected to be the Buccaneers’ No. 3 wide receiver behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

♦ The Titans can breathe easier after receiver Treylon Burks reportedly only has a sprained LCL in his left knee. Coach Mike Vrabel said that Burks won’t be sidelined for too long.

♦ The Eagles had two players — receiver Tyrie Cleveland and defensive tackle Moro Ojomo — carted off with neck injuries during their 18-18 tie against the visiting Browns.

♦ Bengals running back Joe Mixon was found not guilty of aggravated menacing in a January traffic dispute in Cincinnati.

Big game for Rodriguez

Julio Rodriguez had five hits and five RBI in the Mariners’ 6-4 victory against the host Royals. He’s the fourth Mariners player with at least four hits in back-to-back games, the fifth player in club history with a five-hit, five-RBI game, and the first Seattle player with at least 20 homers in each of his first two seasons. And with 30 steals, he joins Alex Rodriguez, Mike Cameron and Ruppert Jones as the only Mariners players in the 20-30 club.

♦ Pete Alonso hit a two-run homer, Jose Quintana (1-4) won for the first time this season, and the Mets beat the host Cardinals 4-2. The Cardinals’ Nolan Arenado appeared in his 1,500th career game, becoming only the eighth player in major-league history to have 320-plus home runs, 350-plus doubles, 1,000-plus RBI, and 3,000-plus total bases in his first 1,500 games. The milestone was last achieved by Albert Pujols from 2001-10 with St. Louis.

♦ Chris Sale failed to get through the fifth inning in his second start back from a shoulder injury, and the Red Sox fell 10-7 to the host Nationals.
