WATCH THIS: SUNDAY
“The Last Ship” (8 p.m., 9 p.m., TNT): The apocalyptic action thriller returns for its fifth and final season, which opens three years after the global famine was vanquished. The U.S. Navy is preparing to unveil its first fully functional fleet since the Red Flu pandemic that opened the series, but a different kind of threat could trigger another world war in the season premiere “Casus Belli.” Eric Dane and Adam Baldwin return as newly minted Admirals Tom Chandler and Mike Slattery. “Rel” (7 p.m., FOX): It might seem like he’s borrowing a chapter from Jerrod Carmichael, whose “Carmichael Show” he co-starred in (and who’s an executive producer here), but Lil Rel Howery writes his own story by basing this new sitcom on his own life. The fictionalized Rel is a Chicago family man who learns his wife has been unfaithful, then has to give himself a reboot.
“The 2019 Miss America Competition” (8 p.m., ABC): “Miss America 2.0”: That’s how pageant officials are referring to this year’s ceremonies — telecast live from Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. — as they try to restore luster and relevance to the event after an ugly behind-the-scenes harassment scandal that wound up putting the Miss America Organization under mostly female leadership. “Dancing With the Stars” judge Carrie Ann Inaba is the host, with Ross Mathews as co-host.
“The Deuce” (8 p.m., 10:35 p.m., HBO): This acclaimed drama chronicling the rise of the adult entertainment business in America returns for Season 2, picking up the action in 1977, five years after the events of Season 1. In the opener, “Our Raison d’Etre,” Candy (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is now a triple threat in the industry as an actress, producer and director, but her partner (David Krumholtz) resists her plans to make more ambitious adult films.
“Shameless” (8 p.m., 10:10 p.m., Showtime): Frank Gallagher (Emmy winner William H. Macy) senses a fresh opportunity to exploit the gullible by entering the political arena as this hit comedy opens a ninth season, with more episodes (14) airing in two parts during fall and winter. Meanwhile, Fiona (Emmy Rossum) tries to expand on her apartment building success, and Ian (Cameron Monaghan) must pay the piper for his crimes after the Gay Jesus movement takes a dark turn.
“You” (9 p.m., 10:09 p.m., Lifetime 9 p.m., LIFEMOV): Lifetime takes its familiar women-in-jeopardy TV movie trope and spins it into a new series, a psychological thriller that re-teams co-executive producer Greg Berlanti with Penn Badgley, one of his erstwhile “Gossip Girl” stars. The actor plays Joe, a seemingly affable Greenwich Village bookstore manager, who becomes smitten with Beck (Elizabeth Lail), a pretty new customer. Joe begins monitoring Beck’s life via social media, but things soon take a much darker turn. Lou Taylor Pucci also stars.
“Kidding” (9 p.m., 9:35 p.m., Showtime): Jim Carrey reteams with his “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” director, Michel Gondry, on this dark new halfhour comedy, which casts the actor as Jeff Pickles, aka beloved children’s TV host Mr. Pickles. He’s been a comforting presence to more than one generation of young viewers, but Jeff is starting to unravel in middle age. It’s a matter of concern to those close to him, including his wife (Judy Greer).
