Shooter in gunfight with police still sought

- By Kelli Smith and Rosemary Sobol

Police exchanged gunfire with someone Friday morning in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, but no one was injured and the person who fired shots at police was still being sought Friday afternoon, a police spokesman said.

The exchange of gunfire happened about 7:40 a.m. Friday in the 700 block of North Trumbull Avenue, according to police.

SWAT members remained on the scene early Friday afternoon, “out of an abundance of caution,” to make sure “that there’s no suspects left in the area,” because the shooter was still at large, said police spokesman Tom Ahern.

No one was hurt during the shootout, which included several bursts of gunfire.

“Multiple rounds were fired at and by the police,” Ahern said.

Shortly before 8 a.m., officers were conducting a narcotics investigation outside when they encountered a gunman who began firing at officers. “They returned fire,‘’ Ahern said, adding that there were no “hits.”

Immediately after this, officers were able to take a person into custody who wasn’t the shooter but was possibly involved. This person was being interviewed by detectives, but no charges have been filed.

On Friday afternoon, SWAT members and evidence technicians remained on the scene processing the multiple shell casings that were recovered.

Officers were also going door to door interviewing neighbors to see if they saw or heard anything and to retrieve any surveillance video or cellphone video they might have, Ahern said.
