“The Alienist: Angel of Darkness” (9 p.m., 11:04 p.m., TNT): Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans and Dakota Fanning return to their starring roles in this adaptation of novelist Caleb Carr’s sequel to his psychologi­cal thriller “The Alienist,” which earned six Emmy nomination­s for its 2018 TNT run. Set in late 19th-century New York, this follow-up opens as Sara Howard (Fanning), now a licensed detective, teams again with Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Bruhl) and newly minted New York Times reporter John Moore (Evans) to find the kidnapped infant daughter of a Spanish dignitary. Douglas Smith, Matthew Shear and Ted Levine also return. Another episode immediatel­y follows.

“Mile High Escorts” (8 p.m., 12:01 a.m., Lifetime): After a co-worker dies under decidedly sketchy circumstan­ces, a young woman who makes a career of working for a private airline stumbles upon a dark secret held by the company’s owner. Unfortunat­ely, her new knowledge puts a big bullseye on her with this powerful executive who already has killed at least once to maintain his privacy in this 2020 thriller.

“World’s Biggest Tiger Shark” (8 p.m., 2:03 a.m., NATGEO): In this new onehour special, marine biologist Kori Garza teams up with Emmy-winning underwater cinematogr­apher Andy Casagrande for an expedition to French Polynesia, where the pair plans to track Kamakai, one of the largest tiger sharks on record. Upon arrival, their quest takes them to a remote lagoon, but instead of Kamakai, they stumble upon a discovery for shark science: a population of junior tiger sharks using cooperativ­e hunting tactics.

“Outcry” (9:55 p.m., 12:30 a.m., 3:30 a.m., Showtime): A new hearing in the sexual assault case against Greg Kelley uncovers some deeply troubling gaps and apparent oversights in the investigat­ion and legal lapses in protocol, in episode three of this gripping docuseries. On the other hand, despite this mounting body of proof supporting Greg’s claim of innocence, several damning pieces of evidence remain that cannot readily be ignored.

“NOS4A2” (10 p.m., 11 p.m., 4:25 a.m., AMC 10 p.m., BBCA): In a new episode called “Bruce Wayne McQueen,” Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings) returns to the Lakehouse, but immediatel­y finds herself driving straight into a lethal trap. Meanwhile, Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto) calls in his favor, and the Hourglass Man, a powerful strong creative, manifests.

“United Shades of America” (10 p.m., 12:16 a.m., CNN): W. Kamau Bell returns to host Season 5 of this Emmy-winning eight-part docuseries that explores communitie­s across the United States to understand the unique challenges each of them faces. In the season premiere, Bell examines white supremacy and systemic racism in America, interlinke­d topics that are dominating the national conversati­on at the moment. Upcoming episodes will find Bell digging into such subjects as independen­t farming, the gig economy, reparation­s to disenfranc­hised minorities, the homeless crisis in Los Angeles and the public education system.

“I’ll Be Gone in the Dark” (10 p.m., 11:30 p.m., 3 a.m., HBO): Michelle and her editors decide to push back her book deadline after she is granted access to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department room dedicated to files on the subject known as the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker in the new episode “The Motherlode.”
