June 1 was the day on which about 250 to 300 people, part of a larger group gathered downtown for an evening Black Lives Matter protest rally, began looting and vandalizing businesses. The release does not say if Vargas’ alleged actions occurred during the violent outbreak.

The Naperville and Aurora police departments were cited in the release as providing assistance in the federal investigation.
