Lawmakerswould misuse ‘fair tax’

- — Raymond Peterman, Glen Ellyn

The flat income tax that Illinois has now is the definition of a true fair tax. Everybody pays the same percentage of their income. A person making $200,000 pays 10 times more than someone making $20,000 (leaving aside the standard personal exemption).

With a flat rate, our lawmakers have to justify an increase to every taxpayer. Ifwe switch to Gov. J.B. Pritzker’s graduated rate system, then the legislature can penalize the top 3% like they plan to. But don’t believe they will limit it to the top 3%. When some of those 3% move to a low-tax state, the legislature will change the brackets or rates, and then many more will pay higher amounts. The state will eventually have to reach deep into the middle class to make payments to state worker pensions (which is what this is 100% about).

It’s best to keep the rate flat so the legislature has to beg all taxpayers for more money, and then we can hopefully convince legislators to amend the Illinois Constitution to eliminate the pension protection clause.

I am a mong the 97% who will not have to paymore (for now). I just want what is best for Illinois.
