Brewers combine on no-no

-

Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader combined on a no-hitter in the Brewers’ 3-0 win over the Indians on Saturday night in Cleveland.

It was baseball’s record ninth no-hitter this season, breaking a mark set when pitchers began throwing overhand in 1884

Burnes struck out 14 over eight innings, overpowering the Indians, who were no-hit for the third time in 2021, all during Zach Plesac starts.

The Indians came closest to getting a hit with two outs in the eighth, but center fielder Lorenzo Cain made a sliding grab on Owen Miller’s sinking liner to right-center to keep the no-no intact.

Burnes (10-4) took a perfect game into the seventh before giving up a leadoff walk. He threw a season-high 115 pitches before manager Craig Counsell pulled him. Hader struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 31st save.

Juan Nieves pitched the Brewers’ previous no-hitter on April 15, 1987, in Baltimore.
