Veterans Day at Cantigny

Cantigny Park in Wheaton has extended its hours on Veterans Day and has scheduled the following events:

Veterans Day evening Thursday, Nov. 11 4:30-8 p.m.

The First Division Museum will have extended hours on the evening of Veterans Day. The “First In War” gallery’s daily sounds and films will be silenced from 4:30 to 8 p.m. for a visual display of flickering candles throughout the gallery to, “keep the home fires burning” for the veterans in our lives.

Moment of thanks Thursday, Nov. 11 5:30-6 p.m.

Veterans and their families are welcome to come to Cantigny Park for a special after-hours moment of thanks, featuring remarks from the Executive Director of Museums at Cantigny Park, Colonel (Ret) Krewasky A. Salter.

Guests will also be able to view a quilt ceremony from the Illinois Chapter of Quilts of Valor. QOV is an organizati­on of quilters who make machine or hand-made quilts to award to service members or veterans who has been touched by war. To use the term Quilt of Valor, Quilts of Valor or QOV, the quilt must be a specific size, must have a label with required informatio­n, it must be awarded (it is not a gift) and it must be recorded, according to the organizati­on’s website qovf.org.

Booster shots available

Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital is offering Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine booster shots to those at highest risk, following the FDA and CDC recommenda­tions, according to James Doelling, Hospital Director.

Veterans who receive care through Hines and are due for a Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 booster vaccine will be contacted by Hines VA to schedule an appointmen­t, or they can call 708-2022707 or 708-202-7000.

Veterans who received a PfizerBioN­Tech COVID-19 vaccine outside of VA, and persons who received a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in VA who don’t have records of their high-risk condition, should contact their Primary Care Provider, or call 708-202-2707 or 708-202-7000 to schedule an appointmen­t.

Those who received the

Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine under the SAVE LIVES Act may consult with their physician if they have questions about whether they should receive a booster.

CDC advises that people can get both the COVID-19 vaccine and flu vaccine at the same time. Veterans receiving care at VA who wish to get a booster shot can get both shots together during the same visit.
