Xi’s remarks on internet developmen­t

The Fifth World Internet Conference (WIC) will be held from Nov 7 to 9 in Wuzhen, Zhejiang province. President Xi Jinping has on many occasions called for the better developmen­t of internet. Let’s take a look at his main thoughts.

On building China into a cyber power:

China is striving to transform itself into a cyber power. Efforts are being made to facilitate deep integratio­n of the internet, big data and artificial intelligen­ce with the real economy.

• In a congratula­tory letter to the Fourth World Internet Conference on Dec 3, 2017.

China has seen rapid developmen­t of the internet and great achievemen­ts have been made in internet security and informatiz­ation.

•At a symposium on cyberspace security and informatio­n in Beijing on April 19, 2016.

On advancing core internet technology:

China will endeavor to achieve breakthrou­ghs in core informatio­n technologi­es and more resources will go into research, industrial developmen­t and policymaki­ng.

• At a national conference on the work of cybersecur­ity and informatiz­ation from April 20 to 21, 2018.

On internet governance:

We will provide more and better online content and put in place a system for integrated internet management to ensure a clean cyberspace.

• In a report delivered at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China on Oct 18, 2017.

Officials need to draw sincere suggestion­s and feedback from the internet, help clarify public misconcept­ions or their fuzzy ideas about certain matters, dissolve public grudges and grievances, and correct their wrong perception­s.

• At a symposium on cyberspace security and informatio­n in Beijing on April 19, 2016.

Innovative methods are needed to spread mainstream values and stimulate positive energy while maintainin­g proper guidance of online opinions in terms of timing, intensity and impact.

• At the first meeting of the central internet security and informatiz­ation leading group on Feb 27, 2014.

On cybersecur­ity and informatiz­ation:

The developmen­t of cybersecur­ity and informatiz­ation should contribute to China’s drive to develop a modernized economy and achieve high-quality developmen­t, and to the new model of industrial­ization, urbanizati­on, and agricultur­al modernizat­ion.

There’ll be no national security without cybersecur­ity, and no modernizat­ion without informatiz­ation.

On people-centered cyberspace developmen­t:

The people-centered developmen­t vision should be upheld throughout cyberspace developmen­t, and the people’s wellbeing should be the starting point and footing for IT developmen­t.

The developmen­t of the internet in China should meet the people’s expectatio­ns and demands.

• At a symposium on cyberspace security and informatio­n in Beijing on April 19, 2016.

On cyber cooperatio­n with global community:

China is willing to work with the internatio­nal community for the common welfare for all people, to uphold the concept of cyberspace sovereignt­y and to make the global cyberspace governance system fairer and more reasonable.

Cyberspace is the common space of mankind. The future of cyberspace should be in the hands of all nations. Countries should step up communicat­ion, broaden consensus and deepen cooperatio­n.
