SISTER ACT
These sisters made people sing the praises of this comedy, which was released on May 29, 1992.
Maggie Smith
Following her time as Reverend Mother
Superior at St. Katherine’s Parish, Dame
Maggie, 82, became venerated not only as Professor Minerva McGonagall in the
Harry Potter movies but for winning three Emmys as Lady Violet Crawley on TV’s Downton Abbey. She’s also starred on stage, in movies such as Gosford Park and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and won an additional Emmy for My House in Umbria.
Kathy Najimy
While Sister Mary Patrick was popular in the choir, Kathy, 60, showed even more mass appeal as the long-running voice of Peggy on TV’s King of the Hill. She also starred on Veronica’s Closet, had recurring roles on Numb3rs, Veep and Younger, performed Off-Broadway and was witchy sister Mary in the cult movie Hocus Pocus. Plus, she once won Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown.
Mary Wickes
1910–1995
Though Sister Mary Lazarus was a tad reluctant to increase her choral repertoire, Mary gladly added a few more parts to her acting canon of over 150 plays, TV shows and movies. After Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit, she lent her voice to Laverne the gargoyle in Disney’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Grandma on TV’s Life With Louie.
Wendy Makkena
After her noted part as the shy Sister Mary Robert, Wendy, 58, wasn’t bashful about doing a litany of things. She’s appeared in more than 30 movies and series — from lead roles on the short-lived Oliver Beene and Listen Up to recurring turns on NYPD Blue, Judging Amy and NCIS.
Plus, Wendy has hit the stage, starred in the pic Air Bud and created the Ruby Rocket’s brand of frozen fruit and veggie pops.
Whoopi Goldberg
Subsequent to on-therun Sister Mary Clarence,
Whoopi, 61, made it a habit of going back-andforth between movies and TV. She’s acted in pics like Boys on the Side and Girl, Interrupted while starring in her own sitcom Whoopi and appearing on shows from Strong Medicine to Glee. Whoopi’s also hosted the Oscars four
times, co-produced Hollywood Squares and, of course, has co-hosted
The View since 2007.
