The Basic Instinct actor shares his excitement over becoming a first-time grandpa at 73!
As the son of Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas is part of one of Hollywood’s most famous dynasties, but he’s never been a grandfather — until now. On Dec. 18, Michael’s oldest child, Cameron, 39, and his girlfriend, Viviane Thibes, became first-time parents to a daughter, Lua Izzy. The baby’s middle name is a tribute to Kirk, 101, who was born Issur Danielovitch in 1916.
Michael, 73, has two other children, from his second marriage to Catherine ZetaJones, 48: son Dylan, 17, and daughter Carys, 14. The whole family is “all ecstatic over baby Lua,” gushes Michael, sharing the adorable nicknames he and Catherine want to be called by their grandchild. “Dylan and Carys love being an aunt and uncle, and we’re so happy to be her Bubba and Zeze.”
For Cameron, fatherhood represents a major turnaround. He served prison time for dealing cocaine and meth, but his family has helped put him back on the right path. “I’ve been spending some time with my grandfather out here in LA, eating dinner and breakfast with him,” Cameron recently told Closer at the Los Angeles Mission Legacy of Vision Gala. “And I remember, one of my oldest memories as a kid is coming to the house and sitting at that table, and they would feed me spaghetti and Parmesan.”
Michael blames himself for some of Cameron’s problems. During his marriage to Cameron’s mom, Diandra, “my career was the most important thing in my life,” he says. “I clearly know I made mistakes. There were absences.” Now Michael and Cameron both have second chances at a happy family. That’s what we’d call a Hollywood ending. — Bruce Fretts,
