A memorial ceremony to commemorate the 17th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States will take place Tuesday on the Derby Green.

The Derby Fire Department is hosting the ceremony, which begins at 7 p. m. at the city’s 9/ 11 Memorial on the Green, located on Elizabeth Street. The public is invited and encouraged to attend.

Assistant Fire Chief David Lenart said the ceremony is annually held to remember those who lost their lives during the terror attack of 2001.

“The attacks on September 11th are a defining moment in our nation’s history, and it’s important that we honor the victims of that horrible day so that future generations never forget their service and sacrifice,” Lenart said.

Lenart said area fire departments and other emergency personnel have been invited to attend the ceremony.

Mayor Richard Dziekan, a retired police officer, will be on hand to speak during the ceremony, as well as other fire officials.

“As has been noted since the terrible events took place in 2001, it is important that we never forget not only those who lost their lives, but also the first responders and families whose lives were forever changed as a result of the heinous acts that were perpetrated against the American people,” Dziekan said. “With a heavy heart, we will gather on the Derby Green to pay tribute to the true victims and heroes of 9/ 11.”
