Support on clean air
As members of the Greater Bridgeport-Norwalk Chapter of the Citizens’ Climate Lobby, we “second the motion” of the Connecticut Post Sept. 20 editorial, “Connecticut’s voice can have effect,” on climate policy.
The editorial describes and supports actions Connecticut and other states are taking as part of the U. S. Climate Alliance to work with Mexico and Canada on clean, green, and cost- effective approaches to energy; and the successful lawsuit brought by Connecticut and New York against the federal Environmental Protection Agency to protect our populations from air pollution from “upwind” states.
A 2018 report by Yale and George Mason universities shows that 70 percent of Americans agree global warming is happening, and 57 percent consider human activities its cause. Yale’s survey showed that 68 percent of Americans favor a revenue neutral plan for a carbon tax on fossil fuel companies, with a national poll showing a similar percentage supporting giving revenue raised equally to all Americans.
Since its founding in 2016 by two Florida congressmen, one Republican and one Democrat, the bipartisan Congressional Climate Solutions Caucus has grown to 88 members, with 44 from each political party. The caucus is beginning to make a dent in climate attitudes and policy choices in Congress.
The Post editorial concludes, “Enough voices can have an effect.” We heartily agree.
The letter is signed by Barbara Bresler, Fran Gallogly, Beth Lazar and Robb Sauerhoff, of Bridgeport; Barbara Edinberg and Monica Roche, of Fairfield; Jo Ann Flaum, Westport; Myrna Retsky, Trumbull; and Jessica Wolf, Stratford.
