Post- and- beam home on the Saugatuck River

- By Bernadette Blaze

As an international banker who traveled extensively abroad, the owner of 3 Stony Point Road in Westport would relish returning home to the waterfront splendor that awaited. Nestled along the banks of the Saugatuck River, the captivating post- and- beam home was brilliantly designed to embrace the breathtaking water views.

“This is an incredibly well- thought out home,” said the owner. “As soon as you walk in, the views of the river open right up in front of you.”

The property is brimming with lush gardens, beautifully landscaped terraces, pool, boathouse, dock and deep- water mooring, creating the ultimate year- round waterfront retreat.

The five- bedroom home was designed by wellknown architect Michael Greenberg. The owner purchased the home in 2004 when it was built, and was drawn to the exceptional views, the flow, and the exquisite millwork that abounds throughout its 7,267 square feet.

“It is very much an arts and crafts style home,” the owner commented. “The quality of the millwork is outstanding as is the way the interior melds with the exterior.”

Inside, walls of glass bring water, nature, and light to every room, while the sophisticated post and beam craftsmanship is abundant with architectural detail. Step down into the living room where walls of windows look out onto the riverfront panorama, framed by beautiful wood beams and fireplace with stone surround. The living room is open to the dining room which also offers a waterfront view. Glass doors lead to the terraced back yard and a screened porch where the owner would love having lunch in the summers or spending time watching thunderstorms roll by.

The screened porch accesses both the living room and a wonderful private library lined with beautiful reclaimed antique barn wood floors, built- ins, a fireplace and hand- laid Tibetan wall coverings. A fully outfitted wet bar services both the library and the living room.

The contemporary kitchen is the heart of the home featuring custom cabinetry and stone counters, bar seating, Wolf and SubZero appliances and a bayed breakfast nook. The kitchen is open to the two- story family room with walls of windows overlooking the river, fireplace and extensive post and beam detailing highlighted by chestnut beams.

On the upper level, the master suite affords captivating water views, a balcony overlooking the pool, fireplace, a grand walk- in closet, sitting room and gorgeous master bath. All bedrooms enjoy a balcony.

The walk- out lower level is complete with a media room, recreation room, second family room, bedroom, full bath, wine cellar and wet bar.

“This is a terrific entertaining house,” said the owner. “You could hold a party for 70 without realizing that there are that many people the house, yet at the same time it feels cozy.”

Outside is a year- round retreat among a freeform pool and spa encompassed by lush gardens, beautifully landscaped terraces, stone walls, and walkways creating an enchanting setting reminiscent of a grotto.

One of the owner’s favorite spots is the boathouse, set high above the river, with its own deck and dock. “Sitting on the deck in the evening as the sun is starting to set is absolutely magical,” the owner observes.

In addition to the waterfront setting, the location is also noteworthy, being within an easy reach to the railroad station and walking distance to restaurants. “The house sits on just over an acre and you can’t see the neighbors on either side,” the owner explained. “You are close to whatever you want, but once you are there it is very private.”
