Hammerheads fall to Denver in franchise’s first game
It was a rough opening night for the Major League Lacrosse’s Connecticut Hammerheads in the first game in franchise history.
Connecticut fell behind by five goals early and lost 18- 6 to Denver on the first day of the 2020 season at Navy- Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md., Saturday night.
Bradley Voigt scored three goals, all in the second half, and Sean Sconone finished with 14 saves.
Denver’s Charlie Hayes and Chris Asianian scored 12 seconds apart to give Denver the early two- goal lead. Denver led 5- 0 after the first quarter as Connecticut managed just two shots on goal and had seven turnovers in the opening 15 minutes.
Ryan McNamara scored the first goal in Connecticut Hammerheads history 2: 12 into the second quarter. Cody Radziewicz scored twice in 78 seconds to pull Connecticut within four.
Ryan Lee and Daniel Bucaro had four goals each for Denver while Madison’s Casey Dowd finished 9 of 11 on faceoffs and led all players with six ground balls.
Andrew Kew had six goals to lead the Chesapeake Bayhawks to a 16- 11 win over the Philadelphia Barrage in the first game of Saturday’s tripleheader.
Darien’s Mark Evanchick, the No. 9 overall pick in the MLL draft, matched up with 2019 league MVP Lyle Thompson and limited him to one goal in the first half. Colin Minicus, another rookie from Darien, had a goal for Philadelphia.
Mark Cockerton scored his fourth goal of the game with 1: 44 remaining in Boston’s 16- 14 win over New York. Bryce Wasserman also had four goals for the Cannons while Ridgefield’s Colin Dearth had an assist. Former Fairfield University star Colin Burke and Connor O’Hara had three goals each for New York.
