Bernice Polan, age 93 of Westport, Connecticut, passed away Wednesday, December 30, 2020. Bernice was born in Brooklyn, New York, a beloved daughter of the late Jack Mordoh and Julia Cazes Mordoh.

Bernice was a loving mother, mother- in- law and grandmother who was devoted to her family. An educator and lifelong learner, she encouraged others to enjoy the arts, be open to new discoveries and continually broaden their horizons.

After World War II, Bernice received her BA in economics from Brooklyn College and became an elementary school teacher in the Chicago public schools. Ahead of her time, Bernice always tried to ensure that underserved students of diverse backgrounds were provided the educational foundations and opportunities necessary to be successful. She later taught at Bi- Cultural Day School in Stamford and moved with her family to Westport in 1965 where she was active in the community, including serving as PTA president at her daughter’s schools. Bernice received her MA in Education at the University of Bridgeport where she became an Assistant Professor teaching in the Basic Studies program and developing the Learning Center as their reading specialist. These programs allowed Bernice to again focus on providing a basic education and study skills foundation for underserved students, as well as introduce international students to studies in the U. S. During her tenure at U. B. she also coauthored a book on dyslexia and helped many nursing students learn their required science material. Bernice made such a lasting impact on her students that she continued to receive cards and phone calls from several students for more than 40 years. After her retirement from UB, Bernice tutored high school students for the SATs, enjoyed gardening and playing tennis, and was an avid traveler, an enthusiastic bridge player, and an active member of three book clubs.

Bernice’s courage, compassion and strength live on through her devoted daughter Lisa Polan and her son- in- law Paul Lobdell of Westport, Connecticut, and her adored granddaughters; Jacqueline and Brittany Lobdell.

A private family Service was held on Thursday, December 31, 2020. Memorial contributions may be made to: Nourish Bridgeport, 2200 North Ave., Bridgeport, CT. ( www. facebook. com/ nourishbridgeport)
