Betty Bader

-

Betty Bader, age 91, passed away peacefully at Jewish Senior Services in Bridgeport, CT, on Wednesday, February 24, 2021. Betty was born in Peekskill, NY, to the late Dorothy and Sidney Poritzky. After WWII, she was introduced to the love of her life, Samuel Bader, a naval veteran who worked as an electrician/ radio specialist. Betty and Sam married on Sept. 11, 1949. They moved to Fairfield, CT, where they made their home and raised four children. Betty and Sam established Bader’s Television store, a fixture on Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield, CT where they worked side by side for many years.

Betty and Sam were always side by side. Whether it was a walk, a scenic drive, or dancing to the big band music at the town gazebo, they did it together, and lovingly. They moved to the “Jewish Home” 6 years ago. After Sam passed away in 2016, Betty became known as the unofficial “mayor” of the residence. She enjoyed walking the hallways, greeting everyone with a smile, and checking on other residents. The “home” was a safe and caring place for Betty as her Alzheimer’s progressed. Betty’s family is extremely grateful to the staff, especially the caregivers that work in the Lipton house community, for the love, comfort and respect they showed Betty throughout her stay.

Betty loved the town of Fairfield and was passionate about her Judaism and community. Sam and Betty were founding members of Congregation Beth El. In 1952, eleven families formed the “Fairfield Jewish

Community Group” and held weekly services in members’ homes and elementary schools. Once the synagogue found a permanent home, Betty remained a figure who supported the religious and philanthropic efforts for generations.

In addition to her beloved husband, she was predeceased by her sister, Estelle Gelbard and Estelle’s husband Paul Gelbard. Betty is survived by her younger brother, Sander Poritzky, and his wife Janice of Wakefield, MA. Betty is also survived by her four children, nine grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren who all loved her dearly. Betty’s devoted children are Linda ( and Sam) Lazinger of Fairfield, CT, Alan ( and Pam) Bader of Trumbull, CT, Diane R. Bader- Anderson of West Palm Beach, FL, and Randi ( and Robert) Gelbard of Princeton, NJ. Betty’s treasured grandchildren are ( oldest to youngest): Illana ( Neil) Nissenbaum, Rebecca A Lazinger, Shira ( and David) Krieger, Stephanie Bader, Seth Bader, Joshua Gelbard, Simon Gelbard, Hannah Anderson, and Aidan Anderson, and greatgrandchildren: Talia, Aleah, and Aaron Nissenbaum, and Maya and Gabrielle Krieger.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, February 26th at 11: 00 a. m. at Hebrew Sick Benefit Association Cemetery, 1400 Black Rock Turnpike in Fairfield. Masks and social distancing rules will apply for those attending in person.
